The orca or killer whale is a curious , sentient , social , emotional , communicative and highly intelligent cetacean.
It’s a toothed whale belonging to the dolphin family - an apex predator at the top of the food chain.
The Sea of Cortez has recently been a hotspot for orca sightings and interactions and that in itself is a relatively good barometer of a healthy ocean, why?
Well a healthy marine ecosystem means there is a source of food for those higher up the food chain and that in turn encourages these apex predators to stick around - which in turn encourages more eco tourism - which admittedly has its own challenges - but overall the signs are positive - support marine conservation and encourage citizen science and we’re one step closer to a healthier ocean, and in turn, a healthier planet.
